Lowbed Transport: How to Specify the Right Trailer
Nama Jeddah Team — Sep 11, 2025
A lowbed is built to move heavy, tall equipment—cranes, excavators, dozers, graders—safely and within height limits thanks to its low deck.
When to choose a lowbed
- Heavy/oversized machinery requiring low center of gravity.
- Bridge and signage clearance thanks to lower deck height.
- Better axle weight distribution via multiple axles.
Key specifications
1) Capacity & axles
Start with the operating weight of the machine (fuel + attachments) and add a 15–25% margin. Choose axle count accordingly to comply with per-axle limits.
2) Deck dimensions & height
Verify length/width against your largest equipment. Lower deck height improves clearance under bridges; detachable gooseneck may simplify front loading.
3) Loading ramps & approach angle
Select appropriate hydraulic ramps and consider a winch for disabled equipment. Ensure ground clearance to avoid tail dragging.
4) Permits & route survey
Oversize/overweight loads may need permits, escorts, and surveyed routes with measured bridge heights and turn constraints.
5) Securing the load
Use chains & binders for heavy equipment and follow a four-point tie-down minimum with wheel chocks as needed. Protect paint/edges with pads.
